Guitar Tuner: The Part & the Practice

A “guitar tuner” can refer to one of two major things: the part on your guitar that you adjust in order to get those strings to the right pitch, and the device you use in order to make sure that you've used that part correctly.  When you think about it, by tuning your guitar, you're also a guitar tuner!  There are things to keep in mind about tuning at every step of this process.

First of all, most good guitars come equipped with high quality tuners that will be perfect for any basic player's needs.  If you're constructing a guitar or replacing this part, however, it's important to buy something that's high quality.  Remember, it's not just about getting the right pitch.  It's about holding that pitch over long periods of time, especially while playing.  For that reason, you shouldn't buy the cheapest tuner on the market.  Rather, you should buy one that's a little more high end and high quality.

How can you tell if a guitar tuner is high quality?  Well, looking at reviews and similar is a good idea.  However, you'll also want to do a little bit of testing for yourself.  Go ahead and play around with the tuner a bit.  If it turns too easily, it means that it's probably not going to hold the pitch.

Once you've installed the part and done the basic tuning, you'll use a guitar tuner to make sure that it's at the correct location on the scales.  You can purchase a basic harmonica for this, but electric tuners are easier and more affordable than ever.
