Which Guitar Picks Are Right for You?

Not all guitar picks are created equal, but that doesn't mean that one is better than the others for everything.  Every type of guitar pick has a unique purpose, and can impact the sound and control of your play in a meaningful way.  Let's go over which guitar picks are likely to suit your purposes best.

First off, the shape of the guitar pick is likely to be either a triangle with a rounded end or a thinner tear drop shape.  In this case, you will want to select the one that you can hold the most comfortably, as the shape doesn't do much to affect the music.

The important factor is thickness.  A thinner pick is perfect if you're going to be strumming.  The gentle sound of the thinner pick is ideal for any of the more mellow songs you might play, or if you're playing in a background role with your guitar parts.

A medium pick is much better for those who are playing a lead part, and controlling the melody.  The additional control that you'll have over the pick, as well as the somewhat more intense sound, make it a great pick for a number of types of music – including the ever popular rock music.

A thick pick is the best for those who are intending to play jazz, or any complex musical part that has a long series of notes that jump across the frets and strings.  Jazz does this most commonly, but the extra control and reverb of the thick pick will be perfect for any jazz rhythms.
